This is it. A journey to circumnavigate the planet on bicycles (plus a couple planes & trains).
A dream come true, a once in a lifetime experience… this is what bucket lists are made of. One day of inspiration, two years of mental preparation, one year of saving, and six months of planning have led to this very post.
Displeased by the traditions of adulthood in modern society – holding down a 9-5 job, paying half our wages to rent, being confined to “two weeks” of vacation per year, and living in a vicious cycle of excessive work & pointless consumption – we decided to listen to the ever-curious voices inside our heads and set out on a quest to create a sustainable location independent lifestyle. Throughout the past year we’ve downsized our home, sold almost every Earthly possession, saved up a bunch of money, and have just recently said good-bye to our employers.
This is by far the greatest risk we’ve ever taken, leaving behind our steady jobs and our loving families to explore the world that we inhabit. No tour guides, no support vehicles, no set itineraries… just the two of us, on a couple of bicycles, with a few bags of gear and a one-way ticket departing from Los Angeles on Independence Day.
Although we have a few individual goals (listed in our About Us section), we also have a few goals that we, as The Wandernauts, wish to achieve.
Goals:
1. Wander off from our daily routine and develop a sustainable location-independent lifestyle
2. Gain an invaluable education from the people and places that we encounter
3. Provide tips & tricks that empower and inspire others to fulfill their dreams of long-term travel

This looks like an awesome trip…can I suggest you visit South Korea? You can get a ferry from Japan and it’s basically a total paradise for cycling – we just cycled there as part of our own RTW bike trip. There’s a blog post about it here: http://thenextchallenge.org/no-water-buffalo/. You could cycle up to Seoul (600km barely touching roads at all) and fly to SE Asia from there. Either way, have an awesome trip and add it the database of long distance cycle journeys once you’ve done 10,000km or more (same website: http://www.thenextchallenge.org/ldcj)
This looks awesome! I am very excited to see updates.
So excited to hear about your journey! No plans to visit Canada?!?
This is truly inspirational. Cannot wait to follow this and maybe even buy you lunch once or twice 🙂
Um…you guys are amazing! I can’t wait to see your updates.
Just got word of your adventure Emily, very inspiring stuff! We will be following the blog closely, have a great time!
You are sooooo much better prepared than when Grandpa Carl and I set off for a simple circumnavigation of Europe. It was a “fail” as far as bicycling went, but a grand time with hitchhiking, trains and a plane (on a terrifying bounce over the Pyrenees).
Grandma! I don’t think I’ve ever heard this story from you 🙂 I would love to hear more about it! I am so inspired by how adventurous our entire family is. I always tell people about your motorcycle adventures from Canada to Mexico!! <3 Emily
